Understanding Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

Understanding Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

CBD is a wellness product that has been increasing in popularity during the last few years. Proponents claim CBD can support whole-body wellness, relieving aches and pains and supporting mood, sleep, and more! But how can you determine which form of CBD is right for you? In this guide, we’ll tackle the basis of understanding broad spectrum CBD oil so you can determine if it’s right for you. Let’s dive in!

The Three Types of CBD Oil

When it comes to CBD oil, there are three main types: full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate.

Each is derived from the hemp version of the Cannabis sativa plant. Each has similar effects on health and wellness, although there are differences in efficacy. While they all start out the same, the processing is what distinguishes one from another. Ready to learn more?

What Does Broad Spectrum Mean?

As mentioned, the main difference between the three types of CBD oil is the way they are processed and ultimately which ingredients they include or exclude.

Broad spectrum CBD is a form of CBD that contains all the various beneficial components found in the hemp variety of the Cannabis sativa plant, excluding THC. THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol. It is the component of the Cannabis plant that has psychoactive properties. THC, in large quantities, can result in the “high” that one gets from marijuana.

Hemp is a variety of the Cannabis sativa plant that is bred to have at most 0.3% THC. Legally, a product cannot be considered hemp if it contains more than 0.3% THC, an extremely small amount of THC that will not activate THC’s psychoactive effects. All CBD is made from hemp, but not all CBD products contain these trace amounts of THC.

Broad spectrum CBD has had all traces of THC removed. It does not contain any THC, and it cannot produce a high.

Broad spectrum CBD still includes three categories of beneficial components found in hemp you should know about. These are cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are responsible for most of the therapeutic benefits associated with CBD. Cannabinoids are the active compounds that help our bodies maintain homeostasis. In other words, CBD can help our bodies stay balanced. Broad spectrum CBD does not contain any THC, a type of cannabinoid. It does contain all the other cannabinoids found in the hemp plant.

Terpenes

Terpenes are the compounds in the hemp responsible for its fragrance and flavors. They also support cannabinoids in producing desired effects.

Flavonoids

Lastly, flavonoids are the third component in full spectrum CBD that assist in the “entourage effect.” The entourage effect is a term coined by experts to describe how all the different components in full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD work together to magnify its wellness benefits. Flavonoids, in particular, may calm inflammation, promote brain health, and have other wellness benefits.

It is important to note that full spectrum CBD does not contain hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. However, it is not found in the plant structure itself, nor is it included in full spectrum CBD unless integrated with full spectrum CBD. If you are looking for a product that includes hempseed oil, be sure to check the ingredient list. Hemp seed oil should be listed as an ingredient separate from CBD.

Difference Between Full Spectrum and Other Concentrations of CBD

Full spectrum CBD is the only type of CBD that includes THC. THC has a number of health benefits, but it is also the compound found in Cannabis that generates intoxication that’s often associated with a high. Most CBD products contain much less than the maximum 0.3% allowed in a hemp product, and full spectrum certified CBD products do not contain enough THC to produce a high. However, it is still a slim possibility.

While the percentage of THC in full spectrum CBD is 0.3% or less -- insignificant enough that you likely won’t feel any psychoactive effects -- there is a small chance that you could. If you want to avoid this possibility altogether, broad spectrum CBD products may be the better option.

CBD isolate products are products that only contain an isolated CBD compound. By filtering out the terpenes, THC, and flavonoids, some people believe that CBD isolate products maximize the strength of the CBD. However, studies are showing that they may lack the entourage benefits that full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD offers.

When exploring different CBD concentrate products, be sure to read the labels and look for “broad spectrum CBD” if that is the type you are searching for.

Benefits of Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad spectrum CBD has a wide variety of benefits! Here are some of the most common ones associated with broad spectrum products.

No THC

Unlike Broad Spectrum CBD, Full Spectrum CBD does contain small traces of THC. There is a small, yet still present, chance of getting high if you consume even the small amount of THC found in full spectrum CBD. This means there are risks of failing drug tests if you take full spectrum CBD. While THC has health benefits as well, it can be a bigger benefit to consume broad spectrum CBD and avoid these possibilities altogether.

Eases Discomfort

CBD is most popular for its ability to soothe discomfort from aches in your joints and swelling in your body. One reason it does this so well is because of the concentration of antioxidants found in CBD. Cannabinoids interact with our bodies' own endocannabinoid system, supporting many functions and influencing natural processes like easing tension and promoting relaxation.

Immune Health

Broad spectrum CBD also can also promote immune health! The cannabinoids found in CBD are full of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids may promote immune wellness, in addition to heart health and better circulation. In addition, the antioxidants found inside CBD  support immune function.

Mobility

Another great benefit of broad spectrum CBD is mobility. As we get older, our bodies may have a harder time keeping up with our active lifestyles and the things we love to do. Sometimes, this is due to joint pain or muscle loss, and other times it can be due to injury or disease. The properties of CBD that may help reduce inflammation and promote pain relief also help increase mobility. This can help you feel less pain when moving around so that you can get back to doing what you love.

Cognitive Function

Broad spectrum CBD may have many benefits for our brains as well. According to the Surgical Neurology International (SNI), CBD is rapidly distributed throughout our brains and easily passes the blood-brain barrier. This characteristic is gentle on our brains and good for brain function.

In addition to CBD’s gentle effect on our brains, it may also help protect them as well!  For instance, CBD can promote blood flow, easing tension in our brains and allowing for better mental processing.

Because of its high concentration of antioxidants, CBD protects against free radicals as well. If we have too many free radicals in our bodies, they can induce oxidative stress, which can cause damage to our neurons. If our neurons are damaged, this could lead to an increased risk for brain damage. CBD has been shown to protect our brains against these free radicals and thus promote our cognitive health.

Relaxation

CBD is also popular because of its stress-relieving properties. As an older adult, stress can be a challenge in your everyday life. However, because of its high concentration of omega-6 and omega3 fatty acids, CBD oil is also believed to support mental health and stress management. It is also known to be effective in reducing feelings of overwhelm or tension!

Summary

The benefits of broad spectrum CBD are numerous. It may ease discomfort and tension, especially in your joints. It may help keep your mind sharp and support cognitive function. It may help increase your mobility and get you back to living the active lifestyle you enjoy. It may also promote sleep by assisting you to relax. It can support your immune health as well! With all of these benefits, broad spectrum CBD oil is worth researching and investing in to promote your health and wellness.
